Election 24

Analyzing the Impact: India’s Block on NDA’s Saffron Sweep in Lok Sabha Polls

BJP Fails to Secure Majority Amid Surge by INDIA Bloc Parties

In a surprising turn of events, the BJP has failed to win a majority on its own in the 543-member Lok Sabha amid a surge by the opposition INDIA bloc. Despite the mixed results for the BJP-led NDA, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead the government for a third consecutive term.

The opposition bloc INDIA made significant gains in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal, disrupting the Modi juggernaut and defying the expectations of pollsters and market analysts. Additionally, power is set to change hands in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, where assembly elections took place alongside the Lok Sabha elections.

Big Highlights of the Lok Sabha Election Results:

Nitish, Naidu, NDA … it’s back to coalition politics:

After dominating the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP no longer appears to be the unstoppable force it once was. Current counting trends show the BJP leading in 244 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 272. This means the BJP will have to rely on its NDA allies to form a third consecutive government at the Centre. The last time the single largest party at the Centre did not have a majority on its own was in 2009 when Congress formed the UPA government with allies after winning 206 seats.

Rise of regional leaders:

The election results have underscored the importance of regional leaders, who have helped propel the two national alliances – NDA and INDIA – to 200+ seats each. In the NDA, leaders like JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar and TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu will be crucial for a stable government at the Centre. Similarly, in the INDIA bloc, leaders like TMC’s Mamata Banerjee, SP’s Akhilesh Yadav, DMK’s MK Stalin, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Uddhav Thackeray, and NCP (SC)’s Sharad Pawar have increased their influence after strong performances in their respective states.

Surge by INDIA Bloc:

The INDIA bloc’s spirited performance in states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal disrupted the BJP’s expected sweep, highlighting the significance of regional powerhouses and defying pollster predictions.

Power Shift in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha:

Power is set to change hands in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, where assembly elections took place alongside the Lok Sabha elections, indicating a significant shift in regional political landscapes.

These highlights reflect the evolving dynamics of Indian politics, emphasizing coalition governance and the pivotal role of regional leaders in shaping the national agenda.

‘UP ke ladke’ a Big Hit:

After a lackluster performance in the 2017 assembly polls, the ambitious alliance of SP’s Akhilesh Yadav and Congress’s Rahul Gandhi has finally tasted success in Uttar Pradesh. Trends show that SP is set to win 35 of the 80 seats in the state, while Congress is likely to secure 7. Altogether, the INDIA bloc is on course to win 42 seats in UP compared to BJP’s 34. This marks a significant decline for the saffron party, which had won 71 and 62 seats in 2014 and 2019, respectively. The grand Ram Mandir ceremony in Ayodhya earlier this year did not seem to resonate with voters.

INDIA’s Pole Position in Maharashtra:

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP (SC) overcame several challenges to outpace the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. Trends indicate that MVA is ahead in 29 of 42 seats in the state, while BJP is leading in 18. The results suggest that sympathy votes favored Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar following their parties’ internal splits.

Congress’s V-Shaped Revival:

In 2014, Congress hit a low with just 44 seats in the Lok Sabha. By 2019, it had marginally improved to 52 seats. However, the 2024 election marks a significant recovery with the party winning 99 seats, just shy of 100. This resurgence dispels the notion of a “Congress-mukt Bharat” and serves as a major morale booster for the party, reinforcing confidence in Rahul Gandhi and his nationwide yatras.

Muslim-Significant Seats Snub NDA:

Out of 103 seats where Muslims constitute at least 20% of the electorate, the INDIA bloc won 54, while the BJP-led NDA secured 44. Of these, BJP won just 37 seats.

Naidu Juggernaut:

In Andhra Pradesh, the TDP is set to return to power after winning 132 out of 175 assembly seats. This is a major setback for the Jagan Reddy-led YSR Congress, which managed only 15 seats, a sharp decline from its 2019 landslide victory.

Setback for Naveen:

In Odisha, the BJP is poised to form its first-ever government with leads in 80 out of 147 seats. The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD is ahead in just 50 seats, marking the end of Patnaik’s 24-year tenure as chief minister.

Bloodbath at D-Street:

With BJP not securing a clear majority, the markets reacted negatively, with Indian benchmark indices losing more than 5 percent throughout the day. At close, the Sensex was down 4,390 points or 5.74 percent at 72,079.05, and the Nifty was down 1,379.40 points or 5.93 percent at 21,884.50. Experts suggest that market volatility is likely to persist in the near term.
